Domodossola: the Sacro Monte Calvario and the Historic Old Town – Private Guided Tour

Departures are available only at 9:30 AM or 3:00 PM. Comfortable shoes with non-slip soles are recommended for the uphill walk. From the village of Domodossola, you will walk up to Colle Mattarella along a cobbled path that takes approximately 20–25 minutes. This route allows you to experience the effort and devotion of past pilgrims, who step by step made their way toward this sacred destination.

Along the way, you will admire the chapels, each with its own distinctive architecture, housing frescoes and life-sized statues inside. Together, these elements create evocative scenes illustrating the main themes of the Gospel, making the Sacro Monte a perfect balance of devotion and sacred art. You will be captivated by its beauty. The descent will lead you into the center of Domodossola, where you can explore the ancient village and the Market Square, famous for its unique trapezoidal shape, surrounded by colonnaded arcades dating back to the 15th century and the balconies of historic aristocratic houses. This square represents the heart of the town, located along the ancient Napoleonic road leading to the Simplon Pass.

Walking through the streets, you will admire churches transformed into noble residences, 16th-century mansions once belonging to prominent figures, and, in the hidden alleyways, traces of the Walser people’s presence. Inside the parish church, you will discover remarkable works by local painters, representatives of the renowned Ossola School of Painting. Monumental perspective frescoes, rich in detail and grandeur, decorate the naves with vivid scenes of saints, prophets, and angels, creating a vibrant and dynamic biblical narrative.
